Squirrel consuming “poisonous” mushrooms

چکیده

The representative toadstool Amanita muscaria plays an important role in maintaining forest ecosystems by forming mutualistic associations with a variety of trees. A is also known for the poisonous properties its hallucinogenic constituents, namely, ibotenic acid, muscimol, and muscarin. Serious cases poisoning humans may involve deliria, hallucinations, seizures, (rarely) death. typical symptom visual distortion size objects, phenomenon that formed basis mind-altering events described Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures Wonderland. Interestingly, we observed Japanese squirrel (Sciurus lis) routinely feed not only on but other species are to humans. This returned fruiting bodies several days, indicating it could safely consume “poisonous” mushrooms. ecological roles fungal toxins remain largely unexplored. One possible deter fungivores. However, fungivores always disadvantageous Amanita, because they disperse intact spores via their digestive tracts. Perhaps mushrooms facilitate mutualisms toxin-resistant squirrels, which can viable spores, while deterring toxin-susceptible enemies, negatively impact spore survival. If so, potential dispersal squirrels analogous seed mutualism, plant offers reward animal as disperser. How do eat mushrooms? What play dispersal? would squirrel-assisted contribute establishment ectomycorrhizal relationships within these ecosystems? These questions warrant further investigation.

Poisonous mushrooms: a review of the most common intoxications.

Mushrooms have been used as components of human diet and many ancient documents written in oriental countries have already described the medicinal properties of fungal species. Some mushrooms are known because of their nutritional and therapeutical properties and all over the world some species are known because of their toxicity that causes fatal accidents every year mainly due to misidentific...

Toxicological Profiles of Poisonous, Edible, and Medicinal Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a recognized component of the human diet, with versatile medicinal properties. Some mushrooms are popular worldwide for their nutritional and therapeutic properties. However, some species are dangerous because they cause toxicity. There are many reports explaining the medicinal and/or toxic effects of these fungal species. Cases of serious human poisoning generally caused by the i...

Vitamin D deficiency treated by consuming UVB-irradiated mushrooms.

Deficiency of vitamin D is usually caused by dietary deficiency and/or lack of exposure to sunlight in dark skinned individuals living at northern latitudes. Simple vitamin D deficiency is commonly treated by prescribing a vitamin D containing calcium supplement. This report presents a patient who rejected this approach and instead, after researching alternative treatment options independently,...

Rapid species identification of cooked poisonous mushrooms by using real-time PCR.

Species-specific identification of the major cooked and fresh poisonous mushrooms in Japan was performed using a real-time PCR system. Specific fluorescence signals were detected, and no nonspecific signals were detected. Therefore, we succeeded in developing a species-specific test for the identification of poisonous mushrooms within 1.5 h.

Practical aspects of genetic identification of hallucinogenic and other poisonous mushrooms for clinical and forensic purposes

AIM To assess the usefulness of a DNA-based method for identifying mushroom species for application in forensic laboratory practice. METHODS Two hundred twenty-one samples of clinical forensic material (dried mushrooms, food remains, stomach contents, feces, etc) were analyzed. ITS2 region of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) was sequenced and the sequen-ces were compared with reference sequences...
